Masdar is committed to helping African nations transition to clean energy by signing agreements during Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW) 2023 with three countries – Angola, Uganda, and Zambia – to develop renewable energy projects totaling up to 5 gigawatts (GW).

Masdar to develop 5GW of renewable energy projects for AfricaAgreements were signed under the Etihad 7 initiative, a UAE-led initiative that seeks to raise public- and private-sector funds for African renewable energy development. Sheikh Shakhboot bin Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of State, launched Etihad 7 at ADSW 2022. This was in order to provide 100 million people with clean electricity by 2035 through the development of 20GW of capacity.

Among the agreements signed at ADSW 2023 under the Etihad 7 umbrella are: an agreement with Angola’s Ministry of Energy and Water for the development of renewable energy projects with a total capacity of 2 GW; an agreement with Ugandan Energy and Mineral Development for the development of 1 GW of greenfield renewables; and an agreement with Zambia’s Ministry of Energy and ZESCO Limited to develop solar, wind, and hydroelectricity projects.
